MA BURSARIES AND PRIZES
Religions and Theology

Chadwick Prize

The prize is worth current UK/EU fees or, for overseas students or EU students holding fees-only AHRC awards, the monetary equivalent. It will be judged on the basis of the candidates MA application and an essay of at least 5000 words on a subject connected with religion or theology. Candidates may also be asked to take an oral examination to verify that the work is their own. Candidates must also have taken an honours degree (or its equivalent) in religion or theology or classics or ancient history within the three yearsleading up to the application.

This prize is open to candidates for any of the MA programmes in the Religions and Theology area, i.e.: Biblical Studies; Jewish Studies; Religion and Political Life; Religions and Theology; South Asian Studies; Theology, Culture and Society. It can be held by either full-time or part-time students.

Bishop Lee Greek Testament Prize

The prize is worth current UK/EU fees or, for overseas students or EU students holding fees-only AHRC awards, the monetary equivalent. It will be judged on the basis of the candidates MA application and an essay of at least 5000 words demonstrating skill at interpreting the Greek text of the New Testament. Essays can cover any suitable topic or passage. Candidates may also be asked to take an oral examination to verify that the work is their own. Candidates must be applicants for MA Biblical Studies. The prize can be held by either full-time or part-time students

Lionel Black Bursaries

These bursaries are for MA Jewish Studies. One bursary of £5000 and six of £500 are currently offered. These are administered separately, by the Manchester Centre for Jewish Studies. For details and how to apply, see www.mucjs.org.

How to Apply

To apply for the Chadwick or Bishop Lee prizes:

1. Apply for your chosen MA programme in the usual way.

2. Send your essay in, with a covering letter stating which prize you wish to apply for (only one award will be made to any one student). Essays must be sent to
