Postgraduate students at Manchester come from a wide variety of backgrounds, have a variety of types of educational experience, and are of every possible age (from 21 upwards!). We recognise this and make flexibility a watchword in both the selection and running of courses. Whatever your interests and circumstances, we are likely to be able to offer something that will work for you.

Postgraduate Study

Studying religions and theology with all the intellectual tools of contemporary scholarship is a responsibility the University of Manchester has taken seriously for over a century. With no binding ties to religious institutions, we approach our subject from a distinctively comparative and interdisciplinary angle.

This approach enables our students to ask questions they might not ask and cross boundaries they might not cross in most other settings where religion and theology are normally discussed. Whatever your own world view, religious background, age, gender and ethnicity, your application will be welcome at Manchester.

We have a broad range of research and teaching expertise which you can draw on.  In addition to research centres in Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies and Religion and Civil Society, we have active concentrations in the fields of South Asian Studies, History of Christianity and Theology.

Postgraduate Taught  Courses

The provisional 2011/12 MA timetable, including module descriptions is now available. This list of MA classes may be subject to change.

Please note that some programmes (Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, South Asian Studies) will also include course units run outside the subject area, or language units not listed below.  Click the links above for more information on these areas.

MA students may also attend any Religions and Theology undergraduate course units. These offer considerable further input in all MA study areas. For details of the units currently timetabled for 2011-12, please click here. MA students may also choose to be assessed in one of these subjects (with a code beginning RELT3). This assessment is by long MA essay rather than undergraduate examination.
