History

History has been taught at Manchester at degree level since the Victorian era, and we are justly proud of our record of developing the way the subject is taught, for example pioneering Economic History and introducing the undergraduate thesis, which has since been copied by universities around the world.

Undergraduate Study

Our undergraduate programmes take maximum advantage of the expertise of our staff, which spreads across diverse regions of the world and many different histories, ranging from the classical era (Greece and Rome) to the late twentieth century.

Postgraduate Study

Graduate study in History at Manchester, whether at MA level or for a research degree (MPhil, PhD), is directed, supervised and taught by scholars at the forefronts of their fields.

Recent PhD successes

Two History PhD students successfully defended their thesis and passed. Congratulations to Kathryn Green with her thesis on 'Political Ideas and Values in Ricardian Chronicle Literature' and Iain Stewart with his thesis on 'Raymond Aron and the Recovery of Liberal Political Thought in France, 1933-1983'.

Professors Gatrell and Summerfield honoured

Congratulations to Professor Peter Gatrell and Professor Penny Summerfield who have both been made Academicians of the Academy of Social Sciences, and who were the only historians to be so honoured this year.
