History of Classics & Ancient History at Manchester

The Department of Classics and Ancient History at Manchester was formed in September 2000, uniting 13 colleagues from three formerly separate units:

In its inaugural year the new Department undertook a fundamental review of its degree programmes. We introduced one entirely new undergraduate programme (in Ancient History) and made important changes to our other programmes. Our main aims have been to cater for a wider range of interests among potential students of the Ancient World and to make our programmes accessible to students who have not had much or any previous opportunity to study classical languages or civilisation.

In October 2004 The Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST united to create The University of Manchester, and Classics & Ancient History became a member of the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities.
