Forthcoming conference - CALL FOR PAPERS - Cairo
The Egyptian Society of Greek and Roman Studies (ESGRS), the Universities of Manchester and of Cairo, in association with the Wellcome Trust, present an International Conference, to be held on 5–6 May 2012 at Cairo University.
Translations in Greek, Arabic and Latin: Medicine and Sciences, Philosophy and Literature - organised by Prof Peter Pohrmann (Manchester) and Prof Ahmed Etman (Cairo).
It is well known that the translation movement from Greek into Arabic flourished during the Abbasid era in Baghdad. In its course, the ‘House of Wisdom [Bayt al-Ḥikma]’ was allegedly founded by the caliph Ma'mun. Later, the Arabic translation activity moved to Muslim Spain. Then a translation movement from Latin into Arabic took place, especially in Toledo. It had a profound impact on the European Renaissance.
We cordially invite you to participate in this conference with a paper focusing on one of the following themes to be discussed during the conference:
• Translations from Greek into Arabic
• Translations from Arabic into Latin
• The role of the Syriac language and Syriac translators in the transmission from Greek into Arabic
• The role of other languages and peoples in the transmission of the Greek heritage into Arabic
• The transmission of the Alexandrian heritage into Arabic
• Translations of literary and scientific texts, and the problem of terminology
