Art History and Visual Studies is one of Manchester's best established disciplines, with an impressive range and diversity of expertise.

Art History & Visual Studies at Manchester

Art History and Visual Studies has a superb record for both teaching and research.  As part of the School of Arts, Histories, and Cultures, we share intellectual interests and connections with English and American Studies, History, Drama, Music, Classics and Ancient History, Archaeology, and Religions and Theology.  We have particularly close connections with the Centre for Museology and the Whitworth Art Gallery.

Our research and teaching cover a range of topics, including the fine arts; architectural, urban, and garden history; links between visual and literary cultures; material culture and the decorative arts; collecting and display; modern and contemporary art and critical theory from performance and installation to film, video, and internet practices.  Courses are offered across a wide range of periods and geographies.

Undergraduates in Art History and Visual Studies can take our BA degree programmes in History of Art, in History of Art and a Modern Language, in Archaeology and Art History.  Postgraduate and PhD students participate in a rich research culture, both within the subject and, more broadly, within the School and in the Faculty of Humanities.

Our degrees offer both breadth and depth.  Whether you are interested in the visual culture of medieval Europe or of the globalized 21st century, you will find Manchester a stimulating and rewarding place to study.
