Art History & Visual Studies is one of Manchester's best established subject areas with academic staff covering
a broad range of historical periods from antiquity to the present day, and regions from Britain, Western Europe
and the Mediterranean world, to the Middle East, and North and South America.

RAE Results 2008

Art History & Visual Studies has made an excellent showing in the recently-announced RAE 2008 results.

It has been ranked fourth out of thirty Art History units nationally in terms of both quality of research and the benchmarking of research (Research Fortnight analysis)

Museums and Restitution Conference

8-9 July 2010, University of Manchester

A two-day international conference examining the issue of restitution in relation to the changing role and authority of the museum, focussing on new ways in which these institutions are addressing the subject.

David Lomas wins AHRC Large Grant on Surrealism and Sexuality Centre for Studies of Surrealism

AHVS students win University Distinguished Achievement Awards in successive years.  Our students have won these prestigious awards in each of the last four years: Jane Chin Davidson (Postgraduate Student of the Year) 2004-5; David Walsh (Postgraduate Student of the Year) 2005-6; Edward Gates and Stephen Gallagher (Undergraduate Students of the Year) 2006-7; and Anne Kirkham (Postgraduate Student of the Year) 2007-8.
