School of Arts, Histories and Cultures

Internal Funding

There are School-wide bursary competitions for Overseas students at MA and PhD level, and each Subject Area in the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures offers a number of bursaries. These internal awards come with the opportunity to teach (in the case of PhD students) or act as an assistant on a research project (for both MA and PhD students). The fees bursaries are set at the level of Home/EU Fees for the relevant course. The MA awards are for one year full time or two years part-time. The PhD awards are for three years full time or six years part time (subject to satisfactory progress). There are also a number of names awards in some subject areas that carry their own conditions.

Please note that Overseas applicants to MA and PhD courses can apply for School bursaries as detailed below; any funding awarded would reduce their fees by the equivalent of the UK fees.

Application process

New Applicants:

The application is in two parts:

  1. The application process is in two parts, both of which must be completed by the deadline of 15th March 2010. First, you must submit the standard University PG online application form. This includes references and transcripts. You can do this at: http://www.arts.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduatestudy/apply/.  You must have been in receipt of an offer of a place by the time the selection panel meets.
  2. You will need to submit a SAHC Funding Application Form with Supporting Statement to the relevant School PG Administrator (contact details on the form).

Existing PhD Students

Existing PhD students will need to submit a SAHC Funding Application Form and Research Proposal to the relevant School PG Administrator. You will also need to ask your referees to submit two new references.

Supporting Statement

As part of your Funding Application, you need to submit a supporting statement (1000-word Research Proposal for doctoral scheme, 500-word Case for Support for the masters schemes). Guidance for this can found below.

References

You will also need two references to be submitted by the deadline. There are instructions for referees in the AHRC guidance notes, and you can pass these on to your referees. You should inform your referees that you are applying for funding. References that do not provide a detailed appraisal of your academic development and suitability for your proposed programme of study, but are simply a general statement of support, may disadvantage even the strongest applicant.

If you have already applied for PG admission, and had references sent as part of that application, then you will need to check with your referees if the reference they provided meets the description set out in the notes for guidance. In the event that it doesn't (this is particularly relevant for internal, University of Manchester candidates) then you'll need to ask them to submit a more complete version by the closing date.

Closing Date

You must submit both the University Admissions Application and the SAHC Funding Application by 5.00pm on 15th March 2010. There is only one closing date for applications each year and there is no flexibility in this date.

School-wide Awards

Rylands Achievement Awards

£500 towards fees for Manchester graduates with first-class degrees undertaking an MA in the School.

MA Scholarships for Overseas (non-EU) Students

The School has a number of £2500 scholarships for Overseas (non-EU) MA students, awarded to applicants of exceptional merit.

Overseas Research Student (ORS) Awards

Although the UK Government scheme has now finished, the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures has introduced its own scheme to replace it. The School offers up to two awards, paying the difference between Overseas fees and Home/EU fees, to PhD candidates of exceptional merit. Students will also automatically be entered into the competition for the other internal bursaries offered by subject areas within the School. In most cases, these consist of Home fees awards; therefore a student successful in both the ORS competition and a subject area award would receive a fee waiver for the whole of the Overseas fees.

Access to Postgraduate Education Bursaries

Two bursaries of £1000 each are available to facilitate access to postgraduate study for students who would not otherwise be able to meet the cost: for example, students whose family responsibilities limit their ability to combine paid work with study. The bursaries are open both to those who hold offers to start a taught postgraduate programme (MA or MusM, full-time or part-time) in September 2009, and to current part-time students who would otherwise have difficulty in completing their programme.
