How to Apply

Except where indicated in the detailed information on particular schemes, all the awards use the same application process. NB: the ESRC competition has a separate procedure.

The application process is in two parts:

  1. You need to submit a standard online application form (including references) by 15 February 2012 at the latest. You can do this here. Your referees will also need to submit references directly to the School by this date.
  2. You also need to submit a SAHC Funding Application Form, along with a Research Proposal to the School PG office (contact details on the form) by 5pm on 2nd March 2012.

Current PhD Students

Current PhD students in their first or second year of study (or part-time equivalent) are eligible to apply for the AHRC and School awards. As you already have a place, you only need to complete stage 2 above.

Research Proposal

As part of your Funding Application, you need to submit a 1000-word Research Proposal. Guidance for this can found below.

References

You will also need two references to be submitted by 15 February 2012. There are instructions for referees in the AHRC guidance notes which you can pass these on to your referees, and in a web version here.

You should inform your referees that you are applying for funding. References that do not provide a detailed appraisal of your academic development and suitability for your proposed programme of study, but are simply a general statement of support, may disadvantage even the strongest applicant.
