Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

The AHRC is the main UK funding council for work in the arts and humanities. It has three postgraduate studentship schemes: Research Preparation Masters, Professional Preparation Masters, and Doctoral. As part of the Block Grant Partnership scheme The University of Manchester has been awarded a fixed numbers of Masters and Doctoral awards in a range of subject areas for a period of 5 years. Under this scheme students apply directly to the University (see application details below). Full details of the subject areas that are covered and the available studentships are available here (please note that the number of awards available in each subject area varies from year to year):

http://www.humanities.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/ahrc/

For the AHRC Guide to Student Eligibility, please see: AHRC Eligibility

How to apply

New Applicants:

The application is in two parts:

  1. You apply directly to the University (to your chosen School), rather than to the AHRC. The application process is in two parts, both of which must be completed by the deadline of 15th March 2010. First, you must submit the standard University PG online application form. This includes references and transcripts. You can do this at: http://www.arts.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduatestudy/apply/.
  2. You will need to submit a SAHC Funding Application Form with Supporting Statement to the relevant School PG Administrator (contact details on the form).

Existing PhD Students

Existing PhD students will need to submit a SAHC Funding Application Form and Research Proposal to the relevant School PG Administrator. You will also need to ask your referees to submit two new references and send them directly to the School PG Administrator.

Supporting Statement

As part of your Funding Application, you need to submit a supporting statement (1000-word Research Proposal for doctoral scheme, 500-word Case for Support for the masters schemes). Guidance for this can found below.

References

You will also need two references to be submitted by the deadline. There are instructions for referees in the AHRC guidance notes, and you can pass these on to your referees. You should inform your referees that you are applying for funding. References that do not provide a detailed appraisal of your academic development and suitability for your proposed programme of study, but are simply a general statement of support, may disadvantage even the strongest applicant.

If you have already applied for PG admission, and had references sent as part of that application, then you will need to check with your referees if the reference they provided meets the description set out in the notes for guidance. In the event that it doesn't (this is particularly relevant for internal, University of Manchester candidates) then you'll need to ask them to submit a more complete version by the closing date.

Closing Date

You must submit both the University Admissions Application and the SAHC Funding Application by 5.00pm on 15th March 2010. There is only one closing date for applications each year and there is no flexibility in this date.

AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards and Project Studentships

In addition to the AHRC's standard doctoral studentships, Manchester has had considerable success in recent years in the Collaborative Doctoral Award (CDA) competition. For full information see the AHRC website (opens in new window). In this scheme the University teams up with a museum, library, archive or other cultural organisation to offer joint supervision on a specific topic related to the external institution's collections or activities.

There are also from time to time studentships associated with large external research grants won by academics in the School. As these CDAs and research project studentships become available they will be announced on this website.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

Three of our MA programmes are recognized by the ESRC (opens in new window) as research training outlets in economic and social history for the 1 + 3 programme (MA + PhD): the MAs in Economic and Social History, Cultural History, and War, Culture and History. We are also recognized for PhD awards in economic and social history. We currently offer two quota awards per year, and are sometimes able to enter candidates for the open competition.
