New young poets at Manchester Central Library

Over 60 enthusiastic poetry fans crowded into Manchester Central Library's Committee Room on 24 September, to hear the Centre's PhD scholars read from their recent work.

Sarah Corbett celebrated the publication of her third collection, Other Beasts, by reading a selection of poems from the book.  She was followed by Simon Haworth, who read new work on Manchester inspired by Irish poet Louis MacNiece's 'diffuse composition' method.

Evan Jones, who will be the first of the group to complete his PhD, read "three religious and two lascivious" poems, while Ian Pople's selection included a eerie description of a monastic graveyard.

The event was rounded up by JT Welsch, reading a well-received poem about washing-up among other selections.  Good to know that his invaluable work helping out at the Centre's wine receptions has been useful to him, as well as us!
