Fine time with Feinstein
Over 120 people packed into Elaine Feinstein's poetry reading in the neo-Gothic splendour of the John Rylands Reading Room, when she visited the Deansgate venue in mid-December. Following an introduction from her publisher Michael Schmidt (Carcanet) the prolific writer read for around 45 minutes, from a selection which extended over her entire career.
This included some of her most recent re-translations of Marina Tsvetayeva's work, poems written after the death of her husband from Talking to the Dead, and a portion of her recent genre-defying work The Russian Jerusalem. Elaine was then happy to take questions from the audience, and a group of poetry students from the Centre were also lucky enough to attend an exclusive masterclass with her where she 'workshopped' examples of their current work.
