Centre for New Writing

Literature Live

The Centre for New Writing is proud to present another season of our successful Literature Live events, and the third of our acclaimed and popular Martin Amis Public Events.

At each Literature Live event a well-known writer discusses their work and gives selected readings to staff, students and members of the public, while our Martin Amis events see a panel of esteemed writers and thinkers debate literature and a key area of modern life with our Professor of Creative Writing. This season we boast visits from Hanif Kureishi, Helen Dunmore and James Wood, as well as our own Co-director, the poet John McAuliffe.

Our reading series was launched by Louis de Bernieres, author of Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Birds Without Wings, in October 2005. Since then we've hosted an impressive line-up of writers including Will Self, Sarah Waters, Toby Litt, Rose Tremain, Hilary Mantel and Michele Roberts.

The events are linked to our MA in Creative Writing programme, a full- or part-time programme with six tutors and up to thirty six students. It consists of strands in novel-writing and poetry, and provides regular assessment and a committed, supportive readership among fellow students and tutors.

Lecturer John McAullife comments: "The MA in Creative Writing and introduction of a PhD in Creative Writing mean that we have a larger cohort of creative writers on campus than ever before, so we decided to create an events series that would both showcase the new courses and provide a chance for our students to meet with and question established writers on a regular basis.

"We hope it will continue to encourage bright, promising writers to enter our courses in poetry and fiction, as well as bringing attention to the ways in which writers address subjects relevant to how we live today."

Blackwell University Bookshop runs a bookstall on the evening of each event, and audience members are invited to a free drinks reception after the readings (not Martin Amis Public Events).
