SAGE
Skills Awareness for Graduate Education Postgraduate Training (SAGE) is the School's programme of skills training for postgraduates on both taught and research programmes.
All Post-graduate students are invited to attend an informative and intensive two week 'Welcome to Manchester' programme at the commencement of their course. Within week one of the training programme students will be introduced to the S.A.G.E programme and their programme directors. Students have the opportunity to attend presentations and visits provided by local archive departments, libraries and museums to enable them to be exposed to the immense resources available in the area, for example the Portico Library, the Imperial War Museum North, the Gallery of Costume and the Whitworth Art Gallery. They can then choose to attend workshops on working in teams, writing skills, handling the sources and an introduction to computation. There are also sessions dedicated to international students and a specific programme of welcome parties which will introduce new comers to other students in the relevant disciplines.
In week two of the training programme MA students have the opportunity to explore the resources of the Greater Manchester area and to work in collaboration with students from other disciplines to focus upon problem based learning sessions which involves a group project led by a PhD leader. This project will enable students to explore the resources introduced to them in week one while addressing the perspectives of several disciplines, sources and methods.
