John Rylands Library
Libraries
Research and teaching in the Centre for Museology are supported by rich resources within the University, in the collections of the John Rylands University Library with its unique Special Collections housed in the refurbished Deansgate building, the Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery, as well as in other distinguished Manchester archives. Access the Library's Online Catalogue.
Museums and Galleries
The programme is shaped by the rich and diverse ecology of museums in the city and the North West, which makes Manchester such an attractive place for museum studies. The Centre for Museology works in partnership with museums and galleries in Greater Manchester and beyond across three areas of activity: research, postgraduate teaching and professional development for the museum sector. In particular, the Centre works closely with the pre-eminent museums of the University of Manchester: the Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery.
Research Seminars
The Centre for Museology organises a 'Museology Research Seminars' series for innovative research and practice in the museum field. Those seminars are a very useful resource of current museological ideas and practice for both MA and Research students. See the 2008-9 seminar posters:
Also, Art Gallery and Museum Studies students have the opportuntiy to attend SHOWCASE, a research seminar series for collection and museum-based research in museology, the humanities and the natural sciences organised by the Manchester Museum.
Web Resources on Museology
The Centre for Museology uses a variety of online media to support the teaching and learning in the MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies and MPhil/PhD in Museology. These include:
- The Virtual Learning Environment of Blackboard;
- A social bookmarking page, which includes bookmarks of websites relevant to Museology and more specifically to issues, topics and courses of the Art Gallery and Museum Studies MA programme. AGMS students add and share bookmarks relevant to their study and courses. In this way, a repository of museologically relevant and more importantly course- and subject-specific web resources is developed - useful primarily to AGMS students and members of staff and hopefully others as well;
- A Flickr account for museum-related images by students and staff;
- The Digital Heritage blog.
Postgraduate Training
Art Gallery and Museum Studies students undertake the Skills Awareness for Graduate Education Postgraduate Training (SAGE), which is the School's programme of skills training for postgraduates on both taught and research programmes. More information.
