Professional Development Programme
Professional Development Trainees
The Centre for Museology, as part of the Institute for Cultural Practices, announces a new continuing professional development programme that offers flexible access to a range of topics and formats in the arts and cultural sectors to meet the needs of established professionals and newcomers. It includes MA modules, professional doctorates and new intensive Spring and Summer Schools. The programme builds, also, on the experience of the 2009-2010 Professional Development Programme for NW museum staff that is now finished.
ICP Spring and Summer Schools
We offer intensive 3 day thematic ICP Spring and Summer Schools which provide a sharp burst of provocative and engaging professional development along with an opportunity to share perspectives with researchers and practitioners working in the cultural sector. Both courses will explore contemporary debates and practices, and involve work on live project examples which could be fed back into practice in your workplace.
Spring School 2011/12: Cultures of Engagement [date tba]
Intended for professionals working inside and outside the cultural and creative sector we will cover methods, issues and theories of engagement. Case studies will look at a range of creative activities and practices used to engage with different audiences and communities. The course will involve presentations from practitioners and researchers, practical exercises,discussion and networking.
Summer School 2011/12: Digital Curating [date tba]
The course is designed for practitioners from museum, galleries, and other cultural or heritage organisations. We will look at the methods and issues around the use of digital media to document and interpret collections, develop exhibitions and engage with audiences. We will also discuss digital media strategies and applications in museums, online, interactive and mobile technologies as well as the various stages for the design and production of digital content.
Attendance at a Spring or Summer School can earn 10 postgraduate credits as part of a programme leading to a Certificate, Diploma or full MA degree.
MA Modules
Modules from the Masters programmes in Art Gallery and Museum Studies and Arts Management, Policy and Practicecan be taken as standalone courses or taken as part of a programme leading to a Certificate, Diploma or full MA degree (at 15 or 30 credits). All modules involve a combination of seminar discussion, lectures and presentations, practical exercises and fieldwork. Teaching and learning strategies develop skills, knowledge and understanding within the context of academic research and professional practice. Current modules include:

The Museum & its Contexts
An introduction to histories, current issues and institutional contexts of museums and galleries.
Objects & Exhibitions
Explores the theory and practice of object interpretation, collection management and exhibition development.
Arts Management: Principles & Practice
An introduction to key debates and practices in arts management looking at the production and reception of a range of cultural activity in performing and visual arts.
Cultural Policy
An overview of contemporary cultural policy,funding and regulation in national and international contexts

Museum Policy & Management
Explores professional and institutional challenges in developing policies and operational strategies in museums.
Museum & Gallery Curating
Offers a critical and in-depth understanding of issues and practices in curating archaeological,ethnographic, art and digital collections and displays.
Creative Learning
Engages with the theory and practice of learning in arts and cultural contexts (run in collaboration with the Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum)
Business Strategies for the Arts
A practical exploration of arts management functions including finance, communications, funding, law and resource development.
Arts, Culture and Communities
Examines the role of artistic practices and cultural heritage with, for and by communities.
Professional Doctorates
The Professional Doctorate in Museum Practice and the Professional Doctorate in Cultural Managementare specifically designed to meet the interests of practitioners who want to conduct high level research which is grounded in their professional knowledge, experience and practice.
Fees 2011/12*
- 3 day Spring or Summer School (including lunch, refreshments and course materials): £470
- MA Module (including seminars, lectures and course materials): £620
- Professional Doctorate (part-time): £2,235 (UK/EU students per annum)

Registration
Registration is by short application form and a 500-word personal statement. Applicants for the standalone MA courses submit also an academic/employer's reference.
If your first language is not English, you need a minimum score of 7.0 on the IELTS test (including 7.0 in Writing) or 600 on the TOEFL paper-based test (250 computer-based), or the Cambridge Advanced Certificate (grades A-C) or the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (grades A-C).
