PhD Research

Working Title: Re-reading and re-writing the Greeks: Refurbishments of Greek Collections in the UK University Museums at the dawn of the 21st century.

My research explores the University museums as an interface of debates and discussions around the archaeological discipline, the interpretation of archaeological objects, current museum practices and theoretical trends and the wider public. In particular, it focuses on the case of classical antiquities in recent and current university museum redevelopments to investigate how classical archaeology has been negotiated in university museum exhibitions.

Short biography:

I am undertaking a full time PhD under the supervision of Dr Kostas Arvanitis (Centre for Museology) and Dr Nick Merriman (The Manchester Museum). Prior to this I studied (Greek) Archaeology in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and I completed my MA in Museology at the same University (Greek State Scholarship).  During my postgraduate studies I participated as a research fellow in the research programme Pythagoras II (EU funded). Following this, I was employed for three years as an archaeologist – museologist, organising the permanent exhibition in the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa, Greece. I have also worked in the organisation and materialisation of several museum exhibitions and educational programmes in Greece and I have a two-year teaching experience, training Museum Guards (courses on Museology, Museum Security and Legislation for the Cultural and Natural Heritage in Greece). As of September 2011 my PhD is funded by the AHRC and the Onassis Foundation.
