Past Publications
'Christianity and Contemporary Culture', published by T&T Clark International, was originally known as 'Lincoln Studies in Religion and Society, and published by Sheffield Academic Press. The series explores and analyses the changing shape of Christianity in contemporary society. The edited volumes consist of national and internationally renowned scholars. Methodologically, each volume offers a form of theological reflection that is hospitable to aspects of religious studies and to the social sciences. The volumes aim to read contemporary culture and cultural studies thoughtfully, regarding this as a key area of interface for the complex panoply of theological disciplines, as well as for other arenas of academic endeavour such as the sociology or anthropology of religion.
Eschewing the normative antinomy between the sacred and the secular worlds that shape many analytical paradigms, the Lincoln Studies in Christianity and Contemporary Culture are characterised by their perception of the relation of religion to contemporary culture as being more equivocal. Just as religion continues to cultivate and fashion society, so society continues to mould religion. Rather than trying to understand Christianity and culture as things apart, the volumes treat them as inextricably intertwined, making for a richer, deeper, penetrating and more engaging type of theological study.
