WORKING HANDLIST OF ROMAN MARTYRS
How the Handlist works!
This is a provisional list of those martyred, or worshipped as martyrs, at Rome up to about 600 C.E.
It does not include apostolic martyrs; nor does it include unnamed martyrs (often commemorated at cult sites as 'LXX martyres' or sim.), unless they are clearly associated with named ones.
The entries are constructed as follows:
[a] Name of martyr, always in Latin form. Where one or more martyrs are associated with him/her, these are listed too, in the order in which they are most commonly found, not alphabetical order (so, for example, 'Nereus and Achilleus', 'Marcus and Marcellianus'). Successive martyrs with the same name are distinguished with Roman numerals in square brackets (e.g. [2]).
For ease of reference, the names of those martyrs who have numbered entries in the Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina (BHL) are always in UPPER CASE letters. Those who have unnumbered entries, or none at all, are listed in Sentence Case.
[b] Following the name of the martyr(s), and on the same line, are comments on their entry in the Bibliotheca Sanctorum (BS). These include, for example, significant variant spellings (the BS lists names in Italian), or variant ordering of the names in the entry. If there is no entry in the BS for a particular martyr, that fact will be noted. Martyrs marked with > have not yet been cross-referenced with the BS.
[c] Immediately below the martyr's name, there appears the details, place and date of martyrdom, and the date of the martyr's feast day, as entered in BHL. If there is no BHL entry, this information may be supplied from elsewhere, and the source noted; otherwise, the line is simply omitted.
[d] The following line simply contains the whole span of BHL numbers pertaining to the martyr.
[e] The next line contains one or more of the earliest sources for the martyr's life, as listed in the BHL. Where such a source may be found in the Acta Sanctorum (AASS), the AASS entry will always be chosen, as being most readily available. The other most common reference is to Mombritius; and the Liber Pontificalis (LP), cited with volume and page number in Duchesne's edition, is naturally the most frequent source for the popes.
So, categories [c], [d], and [e] (in a full entry, the second, third and fourth lines after the martyr's name) all pertain directly to information to be found in BHL. Where there is no BHL entry for a martyr, that fact will always be noted. It will also be noted where there is uncertainty in the attribution of data to a particular BHL entry. (Noting this is very useful. Several confusions have already been cleared up by having an available list of possible options.)
[f] lists the entry or entries to be found in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum. MH designates names found in the actual text, and endorsed by Delehaye in his commentary (as the text of MH is highly contaminated, often a single name prompts long associative lists, and these have in general been omitted). 'MH' designates an interpretation or emendation of an entry made by Delehaye in his commentary. ?'MH' designates a tentative interpretation by Delehaye.
Each MH entry contains the date to which it pertains, and the page number in Delehaye's edition on which the relevant entry, or note in the commentary, appears (not necessarily the page on which the original MH text for the date is printed).
[g] An entry prefaced by CBCR gives relevant data (foundations in the name of martyrs up to c. 600) from Krautheimer's Corpus Basilicarum Christianarum Romae. Page numbers are not given, as the churches are listed through the corpus in alphabetical order by dedicatee, so references are easily found.
[h] An entry prefaced by DE R flags a significant discussion of the martyr(s) (i.e. more than a few words) in De Rossi's Roma Sotterranea Cristiana. The discussion is noted by volume and page number.
[j] An entry prefaced by LP contains references from the Liber Pontificalis to papal foundations in the martyr's name, or donations to a foundation in the martyr's name. It does not include references to martyrdom of the popes themselves in the LP, as these are highly unreliable (though most of such references have ended up being included under [e], by virtue of cross-referencing with MH).
N.B. that unlike the references under [e], these references are made to Davis' translation of LP (in TTH: Liverpool 1989), and include the number of the entry according to his classification, and the dates of the pope according to his calculation (e.g. '[50] Felix II (483-492)').
[k] Site. This includes any site associated with the martyr -- whether because of burial, translation, or the dedication of a basilica -- in any of the sources consulted. Every martyr mentioned in Amore I Martiri di Roma is included, with page reference (given this inclusivity, Amore is listed in bold for ease of reference). The maps (facing p. 1750 and on p. 1753) in Pietri's Roma Christiana were also consulted, and where necessary cross-referenced with his text: information from this source is signalled simply as 'Pietri'. Krautheimer, Rome: This category also frequently includes data from LP or MH, often quoted verbatim. In both these cases, the data will refer to the previous entry (at [j] or [f] respectively); if there are several earlier entries, the relevant one will be specified.
Entries [f] to [k] may each be omitted if there is no pertinent data from the respective sources.
This list is intended to be used as a point of departure, not as a definitive or exhaustive catalogue. The style and criteria for inclusion developed (and became easier to judge!) as the list became more extensive: therefore it may be of use to know in which order the sources were consulted. They run as follows (using the handlist's abbreviations), from least to most recent: De R; CBCR; Pietri; LP; Amore; MH. Cross-referencing with the BHL was carried out throughout the compilation of the list.
WORKING HANDLIST OF ROMAN MARTYRS
NOTE
Martyrs whose entries are preceded by a double asterisk (**), and whose entries are not indented, have been incorporated from dossiers prepared on individual martyrs/groups of martyrs. Indented entries with a double asterisk occur where a martyr/group of martyrs already has an entry, but where preparation of a dossier has yielded new data.

MH Apr 18 (with 'Antea mater eius'), 'MH' Nov 24 (619).
-- LP: [51]Gelasius (492-496) dedicated basilica to St. Eleutherius. [I am assuming that this is the one intended; it could conceivably be Eleutherius papa above.]
Site: on the Via Labicana at the Villa Pertusa (LP). 'MH' Nov gives Via Salaria.
EMERENTIANA
v.m. Romae, s. III -- Jan. 23.
BHL [as for Agnes].
Site: cem. 'Maius' on Via Nomentana (adjacent to that of Agnes) (Amore pp. 81-82).
EUGENIA

MH Dec. 25 (7), Sep 11 (501) -- with Prothus, Hyacinthus, and Basilla.
Site: cem. of Apronianus on Via Latina (Amore pp. 125-126, MH).
EUPHEMIA
Which? BHL gives three choices: (i) v.m. (cum Dorothea, Thecla et Erasma) Aquileiae, sub Nerone; (ii) v.m. Chalcedone, sub Diocletiano; (iii) v.m. (cum Thecla) Tergesti, sub Valeriano. More info. needed to differentiate.
-- LP: [80]Donus dedicated church on the Via Appia to Euphemia.
Euphrasius
episcopus
[no BHL ref]
?'MH' Mar 12 (139). [Could the ref be to Euphrasia, whose feast day is Mar 13 (BHL 2718-21)? Certainly Delehaye frequently changes feminine to masculine forms... ]
EUPLUS
diac. m. Catanae, sub Diocletiano.-- Aug. 12.

AASS. Aug. II. 721-22.
--LP: [75]Theodore (642-649) built oratory to St Euplus.
Site: oratory outside St Paul's gate (LP).

BHL 2742-47.
AASS. Aug. V. 115-116.
-- DE R II, 210: 'Damaso diè ad Eusebio il titolo di martire lato sensu'.
Cubiculum of martyrs Calocerus and Parthenius [BHL 1534: sub Decio -- May 19] next to crypt of S. Eusebius -- date of their death and burial uncertain.
Site: there is a cem. of Pontianus at the third mile on the Via Portuensis (Pietri -- but this is not, according to Amore, the martyr Pontianus -- p. 227).
EUSEBIUS [2]
presb. Romanus, d. cca. med. saec. IV -- Aug. 14
BHL 2740-41
AASS. Aug III. 166-67.
'MH' Aug 14 (444), 'Romae Eusebii tituli sui conditoris'. 'MH' Oct 8 (546) gives almost identical entry.
-- CBCR: church based on a 'titulus Eusebii'; 'Gesta Eusebii Presbyteri' ?S.V in., Acta SS. Aug. II, 116 ff. [?reps. previous edition of AASS? or the Eusebius of BHL 2740 -- with which the ref. still doesn't jive].
Eusebius [3]
papa [later martyr], 309/10 -- Sep 26.
[no BHL number: entry with LP ref]
MH Sep 26 (527), Oct 2 (537) -- 'natale'.

Site: Via Nomentana mil. xviii ('MH').
Euticianus
papa, d. 283 -- Dec 8.
[BHL entry, but no number]
MH Dec 7 (638), 'MH' Dec 8 (639).
Site: in cim. Callisti Via Appia ('MH').
EUTYCHIUS = EUTICIUS
?BHL 2779-80: presb. m. apud Surianum in Tuscia, sub Diocletiano (?) -- May 15
-- DE R III, 37: Eutychius.
MH July 2 (347) [site as 'via Appia in cim. Callisti'may imply confusion with Euticianus].
Site: ?Via Nomentana (cem. unspecified) -- if this is the Euticius of Amore pp. 89- 90. But there's also Amore 185-96, a Eutychius buried in the cem. 'in catacumbas' on the Via Appia.
Exsuperantius
[no clear BHL correlation]
MH Aug 10 (431).
FABIANUS
Papa m., 250 -- Jan. 20
BHL: listed (between 2816 and 2817), but no number.
MH Jan. 20 (p. 50): passio Fabiani episcopi. MH Jan. 16 (p. 42): Delehaye suggests interpolation, with original ref. being to African martyr Fabianus. See also 'MH'Jan 25 (62), Jan 26 (63).

-- DE R II, 60: Fabianus (sometimes called Flavianus).
Site: cem. of Callistus on Via Appia (Amore pp. 143-44; ep. of Cyprian earliest testimony of his martyrdom). 'MH' echoes cem. Callisti.

BHL 2857-58.
Mombritius I. 306v-307. (Also a Life in AB II. 322-24.)
'MH' July 29 (404).
-- LP: [38]Felix II (355-365) was himself a martyr, beheaded for proclaiming Constantius to be a heretic.
Site: is this the Felix whose cem. is suggested to be on the Via Portuensis (Pietri)? (MH gives Via Portuensis, and adds mil. iii.) Pietri p. 614 is inconclusive; he refers to de Gaiffier, AB 81 (1963), 339. Amore pp. 234-6 seems to feel it is, but comments on lack of secure records (gives feast day, for example, as either 29 July or 22 December). He gives the site as cem. 'ad insalatos' on Via Portuensis. N.B. that Amore also discusses the confusion of the antipope Felix buried in the sanctuary 'ad duos felices' with the martyr Felix of the Via Portuensis (pp. 257-76).

AASS. Aug. V. 122.
Site: cem. of Hippolytus on Via Tiburtina (Amore pp. 102-3; he argues against this Genesius being the martyr of Arles, pointing out that in Mart. Hier. he is clearly a Roman martyr. The consequent identification with the mimus is an internal assumption).

**Hippolytus and his nurse, Concordia
(BHL 3961 [= Delehaye, ed. Passio Polychronii §§ 30- 35]; there is surely some error here, in that BHL lists this under the prespyter Hippolytus, ob. circa 236).

-- CBCR: martyred 258 under Valerianus with Sixtus II; Lib. Pont. I, 155 adds 'in cymiterio Cyriaces' [but archaeology may be too diverse to counterpoise with texts: churches of S.
