About the Project

Since the Faith in the City Report published in 1985 huge changes have taken place in many English Cities.

  • Global changes in the economy have transformed the way we all live and work.
  • The old industries, mines, factories and docks have disappeared.
  • Urban regeneration programmes have come and gone.
  • New Housing estates have appeared and many historic neighbourhoods have been gentrified.
  • Ethnic and religious diversity has increased and new communities from all over the world have become established.
  • Yet urban problems of deprivation, inequality, racism, crime and homelessness remain

How have churches and communities coped with the changes?

Have they responded in ways which try to meet the new challenges of urban life?

Have they had any influence on the strategies and policies which shape our cities?

What are the lessons for the future of mission and ministry in the urban world?

The Communities in Transition Project tried to investigate these issues by drawing together data and experiences from several different cities.
