Annual Theme 2011-2012: Science, Technology and the Arts
This year's theme will address the following: convergences (and divergences) in the history of the arts (including cinema and literature) and the history of science; theoretical influences which have crossed the science/arts divide; debates about biomedicine, concerning both physical and mental health and its implications for creativity, performance, narration; the place of science in imaginative forms of entertainment, such as science fiction and other related genres; experimental work by artists, filmmakers and writers exploring the technologisation of the body and the spaces it inhabits; questions of the politics of scientific and medical knowledge and challenges to its authority; the emergence of science and technology studies and its implications for the arts generally; philosophical, theoretical and political questions that cut across the arts, technology and sciences.
Other events and collaborations
We also put on a number of other events outside of the research theme, often collaborations with other departments. CIDRA also hosts twice yearly book launches at Blackwell University Bookshop to showcase books by SAHC research staff. They give academic staff an opportunity to tell others about their work, and provide an occasion for us to learn about the research and interests of colleagues across the School.
