About CIDRA

Established in 2005 and directed by Professors Frank Mort (2005-8), Janet Wolff (2008-2010) and Jackie Stacey (2010-present), CIDRA’s brief has been to facilitate cross-disciplinary activities and exchanges within the SAHC and beyond. Collaborations within the Faculty and the University include: CRESC, CTI, the Morgan Centre, CHSTM, the Granada Centre and Inter-Faculty Lectures. The CIDRA management committee, chaired by the SAHC’s Research Director, meets twice a semester and includes representatives from all Subjects.  CIDRA’s activities can be divided into 3 main interconnected categories:  Interdisciplinary Research Culture (Public Lectures and ‘In Conversation’ events), Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Research Training, and Public Engagement.

 

Annual Theme 2011-2012: Science, Technology and the Arts

This year's theme will address the following: convergences (and divergences) in the history of the arts (including cinema and literature) and the history of science; theoretical influences which have crossed the science/arts divide; debates about biomedicine, concerning both physical and mental health and its implications for creativity, performance, narration; the place of science in imaginative forms of entertainment, such as science fiction and other related genres; experimental work by artists, filmmakers and writers exploring the technologisation of the body and the spaces it inhabits; questions of the politics of scientific and medical knowledge and challenges to its authority; the emergence of science and technology studies and its implications for the arts generally; philosophical, theoretical and political questions that cut across the arts, technology and sciences.
