Art History and Visual Studies

Art History & Visual Studies at Manchester

As a student in Art History, you will be taught by scholars who are trendsetters in their fields.  Known for the breadth of our coverage, AHVS is now expanding with three exciting new appointments in areas from the Renaissance to the present.  Much of our teaching is cross-disciplinary, and we are also developing a new curating strand in response to students' concerns about employability.

Few other universities can rival our rich resources.  We naturally enjoy close ties with the Whitworth Art Gallery, which is about to undergo a £12 million refurbishment.  In addition to its teaching collections, the Whitworth also offers placements and volunteering opportunities, giving insight into one of the main career avenues arising from an art history degree.  We also organize study days and workshops with the Manchester Art Gallery, while Tate Liverpool is only a stone’s throw away.

Of course, the student experience isn’t solely about studying.  Manchester is renowned for its vibrant music and cultural scene.  Our student society, the Manchester Art Group, organizes social events, talks, and exhibitions.  We welcome you to apply for a place to study with us.

From a recent external examiner's report on our UG programme:

'robust and commendable in both its range and the quality of its delivery.'

'impressed by the combination of high quality feedback and the fairness of marking across the board.'

'a rich range of courses offered.'

The Manchester Art Group

The Manchester Art Group is an undergraduate collective based in AHVS.  We curate events, talks and exhibitions, take trips, and aim to link up with contemporary art practice in Manchester and across the North West.  This year we organised two shows of emerging artists and photographers in the Group's own exhibition space, the ManCoop Corridor, and put on a student social at the Whitworth Art Gallery, with live dubstep, a lightshow, free drinks, and simultaneous craft workshops.  We've also hosted the first of a series of events, “The Art of Curating”, in which leading museum and gallery professionals discuss their work.  Generous backing from the university will enable the Art Group to expand its innovative, ambitious and exciting programme in the next year.  Come and get involved!
