Resources
We have excellent resources and facilities that are used for both research and teaching in a variety of areas. There are dedicated teaching and research laboratories with a wide range of equipment to support fieldwork and finds analysis. We have access to specialist scientific equipment and expertise in the science departments of the university, as well as strong links to related disciplines such as geography and earth sciences.
There are regular research seminars, giving the opportunity to discuss some of the latest research being carried out in Britain and beyond, as well as a student led archaeology society. Students are also encouraged to participate in archaeology beyond Manchester, for example at conferences and in fieldwork that engage at a national and international level.
We have close links with the the University's Manchester Museum, including a jointly appointed staff member. The Museum has outstanding collections of Egyptian, Classical and other antiquities. Manchester students can also draw upon the resources of museums in Chester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Carlisle, and a number of academic staff have close links with the British Museum.
The main library provision is the John Rylands University Library, one of the UK's top university libraries with arguably the best access to electronic resources of any library in Europe. Archaeology also shares a disciplinary library with Art History in the same building as our offices and laboratories. This provides a pleasant and quiet working environment for students, with access to the most commonly used publications.
Archaeology has a very diverse range of job prospects and we are particularly well served by the University of Manchester careers service, one of the pre-eminent university careers services in the UK.
